Dental Anxiety

Feeling anxious about your next dental visit? Sedation dentistry can help you!

IV Sedation Dentistry in Sarasota, FL

Dental fears are common. According to some estimates, as many as 75% of American adults have some level of dental fear. While most of these cases are mild and don’t interfere with proper dental care, about 5 to 10% of U.S. adults have fear and anxiety so severe that it’s actually classified as a phobia.

When dental anxiety becomes so bad that it causes you to avoid seeing the dentist for regular preventive care, a vicious cycle is created. Without preventive care, you are likely to develop problems. When a problem occurs, you may put off treatment until the problem becomes severe. At this point, more complex treatment is needed, which only validates the fear of the dentist.

At Sarasota Dental Arts, we want to break this cycle.

Dr. Kaya Aygen is certified in IV conscious sedation, which allows you to relax and even sleep through your dental visit. He completed his training in this technique at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.

FACT: Dentophobia is a very common fear in the U.S.

Is IV Sedation Right for Me?

Everyone has different and unique needs when it comes to their dental care, and Dr. Aygen understands and respects this. He also recognizes that some people have a great deal of fear and anxiety when it comes to dental visits. This is sometimes because of an unfortunate experience earlier in life, but sometimes it isn’t clear where the fear originated.

The popular media certainly isn’t helpful.

Dental work is often portrayed as painful and frightening, and dentists are often played as sadistic, cruel, and uncaring. While this is often done for laughs, it’s created an unfortunate and very negative stereotype of dentists and has led to a lot of fear. What’s worse is that these stereotypes are even presented in children’s TV shows and movies, causing fear to develop early in life. Children’s dentists, in particular, have to work hard to overcome this negative presentation of dentistry.

If you’ve been struggling with dental anxiety and have found yourself putting off necessary treatment (or even routine preventive care), please call our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Aygen. During this consult, Dr. Aygen will simply sit and talk to you about your needs and your concerns. He’ll also take a medical history and discuss any medications you are taking to make sure that IV conscious sedation is a safe choice for you.

Call Sarasota Dental Arts today to learn more about IV sedation. Your smile is important, and we’d like to help you take care of it free from stress and anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide is Available

Another method of sedation is the use of nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas. This option also helps relieve anxiety and lightens the mood. This particular method helps children and teens who may feel fearful. Nitrous oxide is also a good choice for patients who have physical or mental impairment that could make a visit to the dentist worrisome or uncomfortable. It helps the patient relax so that they will have a better experience.

Before administering any sedation, it is critical to review your health history. We take into consideration all medications and supplements you are taking and we ask about your habits such as smoking and alcohol intake. After examining the health history and making the determination that you are a good candidate for sedation, we will then go over the steps to prepare for your dental sedation visit. We carefully screen all sedation patients at Sarasota Dental Arts because your health and safety come first. Contact us today to schedule an appointment. We are committed to ensuring that you have a good dental experience.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

No.

Because IV sedation requires an empty stomach and the effects linger for a while after your appointment, it is important that someone else drive you to and from your sedation appointment. It’s also good if that person can stay with you for a few hours following your appointment to help avoid falls or other accidents.

Many of our patients plan to take it easy for the rest of the day following dental care with IV sedation. Take advantage of the opportunity to relax, and don’t plan to return to work or go to any further appointments for the day.

Can you drive after nitrous oxide?

Oral sedation also requires a friend or family member bring you to and from your appointment. If you are only receiving nitrous oxide, however, you will be able to drive yourself. The effects of nitrous leave almost instantly once the mask is removed.

At Sarasota Dental Arts, IV sedation is only offered to people healthy enough to be sedated in an office situation. Additionally, patients are monitored closely throughout the entire session with a state-of-the-art monitoring system. This allows us to see any changes as they happen and safely reverse any sedation if need be. Any medicine we give you to help you relax can be safely reversed.

All of the staff are well-trained in sedation situations and how to make your entire visit as safe and comfortable.

We Love Our Patients

and our patients love us!

Just had my first visit with Sarasota Dental Arts. The staff was super friendly. Dr. Aygen gave me the most thorough dental exam I have ever had. He went over a complete dental plan with me and answered all my questions. When I left, I had a print out of what we discussed, including prices. Glad I made the switch.

I’ve had a fear of going to the dentist since I was a kid. I can honestly say after coming to the office several times that I will never go to another Dentist. My mother recommended them to me. I recommend them to everyone. The staff and Kaya Aygen, D.M.D are very nice and take the time to explain to you any questions you may have.
